# What are North American Area Codes?

[Twenty-five North American countries][nanpa-members] share the +1 [country code][ccc] then divide device numbers using assigned prefix numbers to local numbers. These *area codes* assist in routing phone calls.

The [*North American Numbering Plan Administrator*][nanpa] (NANPA) assigns the regional and non-geographic area codes assigned to signatory countries. [*North American Numbering Plan*][nanp] (NANP) covers the United States, Canada, some Caribbean countries, and all US territories. NANPA calls area codes *Number Plan Areas* (NPAs).

* The US covers **317 geographic area codes** and **18 non-geographic** area codes for a total of **335 US area codes.**
* Canada covers **40 geographic area codes** and **two non-geographic area codes** for a total of 42 area codes.
* NANPA publishes two reports of the distribution area codes:
